Just north of the Custom House border, a historic 1889 case known as the "Plaistow Ghost" caused massive public hysteria. The Story: Over several weeks, thousands of East Enders flooded the local streets following reports of an eerie, glowing entity floating over fences and walls in the dead of night. The Hysteria: The sightings became so disruptive that the Metropolitan Police had to deploy large groups of officers to break up the crowds out of fear of a riot. While the press blamed "gullible" locals and suggested it was merely a prankster covered in phosphorus paint, a definitive culprit was never caught, leaving it a classic piece of Victorian East End lore. |
